This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to command and operate the engines of a vessel:

This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Coxswain Grade 1 NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

Elements of Shipboard Safety: To complete the full Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain) qualification students are required to complete the Elements of Shipboard Safety units. Students who have completed Elements of Shipboard Safety in the past 5 years will not have to repeat this course, you will have to provide a copy of your certificate.
The Coxswain (Grade I NC) Certificate of Competency allows a Mariner who wish to command a commercial vessel up to 12 metres in length, operating no more than 15 nautical miles to sea, with a diesel engine capacity of <500 kW (670hp) and may be carrying passengers.
Zoom Classroom Sessions– 2.5 weeks + the relevant Sea time
Remote / Flexible – 12 months from enrollment date
Classroom sessions – If you enroll in a classroom session this can be completed in a 2.5 week time frame, we start at 0800 to 1600 Monday to Friday. You will be required to complete your assignments in the evening and work on Sundays to complete your coursework.
Remote / Flexible – If you do not wish to attend classes or you do not have the time to attend you can study remotely. When you enroll and pay your course fees you will be issued all the course material and access to training resources and trainers to assist you through this process. All students will be assessed practically which can be done at our Brisbane Campus or offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.
MARN008- Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres
MARH013- Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres
MARC037- Operate inboard and outboard motors
MARK007- Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
MARI003- Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
MARB027- Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
MARJ006- Follow environmental work practices
MARC038- Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
Pre – Requisite ( While the following modules are a prerequisite you do not necessarily need to complete prior to enrolling, you will need to have these completed to be issued you full certificate and complete your course)
MARF027- Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
MARF028- Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
MARF029- Meet work health and safety requirements
MARF030- Survive at sea using survival craft
There are no entry requirements for this course, however to convert this certificate to a Marine Licence you must be 16 years of age when applying and meet all the Pre-Requisite check list as per above.
