MED 1 – Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 NC

Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 or known as MED 1, currently meets the requirements for certification as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D. Certification will require achievement of the MAR40518 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal), qualifying sea service and completed Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved task book, achieve the AMSA final assessment and provide an AMSA approved first aid certificate.

PREREQUISITES CHECKLIST

• Be at least 16 years when the certificate is issued
• Record of Sea Service (AMSA form 560) or
• Record of Sea Service to meet standard, signed by a qualified person;
• Certificate of Medical Fitness for a Marine Qualification (AMSA form 559);
• Eyesight test certificate (AMSA form 542);
• Proof of Identity;
• Photographs (2);
• Certificate 4 Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 (NC) issued by an AMSA approved registered training organisation (RTO);
• HLTFA unit of competency Apply first aid or another certificate that the national regulator considers to be equivalent;
• Application for a Certificate of Competency – first time issue (AMSA form 534);
• Pay fee/s.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This qualification is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 3000 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

DURATION

Virtual Classroom – 4.5 weeks  MUST ATTEND NO REMOTE CLASSES ARE OFFERED FOR THE MED 1 COURSE
Structure Classroom sessions can be completed in 4 weeks, we start at 0800 hours including Saturday. We will try and accommodate everyone in the class by not moving any quicker than the group can cope with, so while we have allocated 4 weeks (24 days) it may be completed earlier. You will be required to complete your assignments in the evening and work on Sundays to complete your coursework. Online – We have an online platform LMS for you and your trainer to compare notes and communicate. All your material will be available through your online portal. All students will be assessed practically which can be done at our Brisbane Campus or offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.

PRIOR TO RECEIVING YOUR CERTIFICATE please provide the following:

• Your Elements of Shipboard of Safety (ESS) certificate
  • MARF027 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
  • MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
  • MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
  • MARF030 – Survive at sea using survival craft
• A copy of a current first aid certificate
• A completed task book or a copy of your approved sea time document

While these do not have to be completed before you commence study they must be produced before your certificate can be issued.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no entry requirements for this course; however you will need to meet the AMSA requirements to convert your certificate to a licence including a certain amount of commercially logged sea time.
